What is thought leadership content?
Thought leadership content shares an expert’s point of view on the problems their industry faces: what’s changing, what most people get wrong and what to do about it. The goal isn’t to sell directly. It’s to show buyers how you think, so that when they need help, you’re the obvious people to call.
The difference from ordinary content marketing is the opinion. A “how to” guide explains something. Thought leadership takes a position.
Step 1: Find a point of view worth sharing
Start with what you believe that others in your industry don’t, or won’t say out loud. Ask yourself:
- What do we tell clients privately that we never say in public?
- What common advice do we disagree with, and why?
- What have we learned from doing the work that most people haven’t?
- What do we think will change in our industry in the next few years?
The opinion test: if nobody could reasonably disagree with your idea, it’s not thought leadership yet.
Step 2: Back it with real experience
Opinions earn trust when they’re backed by something real:
- Stories from your own work (without naming clients unless they’ve agreed)
- Patterns you’ve seen across many projects
- Data you’ve collected yourself
- Mistakes you’ve made and what you changed
Never invent examples or numbers. One honest story is worth more than any made-up statistic.
Step 3: Choose the right formats
Opinion articles
on your own website, where they build your search presence too
Founder or leader posts
on social channels, in the leader’s own voice
Guest articles
and expert comments for industry publications
Podcasts and interviews
, as a guest or a host
Talks and webinars
for your industry
Email newsletters
to people who already follow you
Start with one or two formats you can keep up.
Step 4: Write like a person, not a company
- Write in the first person when it’s a leader’s piece.
- Use plain language. If it sounds like a press release, rewrite it.
- Keep each piece to one main idea.
- Say what you’d do, not just what others should consider.
If the expert doesn’t have time to write, interview them and turn their words into the piece. Their ideas and voice are what matter, not who types it.
Thought leadership for founder-led B2B companies
In many smaller B2B companies, the founder is still the best salesperson. Their views are a big part of why clients buy. Sharing those views publicly helps more buyers get to know the founder’s thinking before the first call.
The challenge is time. A simple routine works: a short monthly interview with the founder, turned into an article, several short posts and a newsletter. See how we help founders in founder-led sales.
Step 5: Publish where your buyers already are
Great ideas don’t spread on their own. Share each piece in more than one place: your website, the leader’s own social profiles (for most B2B audiences, organic LinkedIn posts are a natural fit), your newsletter and your sales team’s follow-up emails. Turn one strong idea into several shorter pieces.
Step 6: Measure what matters
- Buyers mentioning your content on sales calls
- Replies, comments and shares from people who fit your Ideal Prospect Profile
- Enquiries and booked calls from content pages
- Invitations to speak, write or comment
Thought leadership builds over months, not weeks. Judge it on trends. For the wider plan, see our guide to B2B content strategy.
