Cold Email vs LinkedIn Outreach for B2B

Cold email and LinkedIn are the two most common ways B2B companies start conversations with people who don’t know them yet. Each has its own strengths, limits and rules. Here’s how they compare, and why we usually use both.

Cold email: reach and rules

Strengths: you can reach anyone whose business email you have, test messages quickly and run longer follow-up sequences.

The rules to know:

Google’s sender guidelines

say all senders to Gmail need SPF or DKIM set up. Senders of 5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail accounts also need SPF, DKIM and DMARC and one-click unsubscribe for marketing messages. All senders should keep the user-reported spam rate below 0.3% (Google, checked 26 October 2026).

The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide

says the law covers business-to-business email too. Messages need accurate header information, honest subject lines, a clear disclosure that the message is an ad, a valid postal address and a clear way to opt out, and opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days. Each separate email that breaks the law can cost up to $53,088 in penalties, and you can’t contract away your responsibility by hiring someone else to send (FTC, checked 26 October 2026).

LinkedIn outreach

LinkedIn outreach: personal, but limited

Strengths: prospects can see your profile, shared connections and posts, which makes a first message feel more personal. It also keeps you visible after the first message.

The limits to know:

Invitation limits

LinkedIn limits how many invitations every member can send each week. If you reach the limit, you may be restricted from sending more, typically for one week.

Personal notes

free accounts can add a personal note to only a few connection requests each month; Premium members can personalize without that limit.

Network size

you can have up to 30,000 connections.

Pending invitations

expire after six months.

Automation

LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits using “bots or other unauthorized automated methods” to add or download contacts or send or redirect messages (User Agreement effective 3 November 2025).

Which should you choose?

Which is right for you?

Lean on cold email if:

  • You need to reach a large number of companies
  • Your buyers aren’t active on LinkedIn
  • You want to test several messages quickly

Lean on LinkedIn if:

  • Your buyers are active on LinkedIn
  • Your profile and posts build trust
  • You’re targeting a small list of high-value accounts

Or use both. Many B2B campaigns reach the same person by email and LinkedIn, so each touch supports the other. That’s how we work: RocketFuel runs cold email and LinkedIn outreach aimed at the same decision-makers, and can add meeting booking.

FAQ

Still unsure? Talk to us.

Is cold email legal for B2B?

In the US, CAN-SPAM allows commercial email, including B2B email, if you follow its rules, such as honest headers and subject lines, identifying the message as an ad, a postal address and a working opt-out. Other countries have different rules. This isn’t legal advice.

Can I automate LinkedIn messages?

LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits bots and other unauthorized automated methods to send messages or add contacts. Check the current agreement before using any tool.

Which gets more replies?

It depends on your market, list and message. We’d rather test both for your audience than quote a general figure.
