GEO vs SEO: What’s Different and What B2B Teams Should Do About It
SEO gets you found in search results. GEO gets you mentioned in AI-generated answers. They overlap more than most people think. Here’s what’s actually different, where AEO fits in, and how B2B teams should split their effort.
GEO and SEO in one sentence each
SEO (search engine optimization)
is improving your website so it shows up in search results like Google and Bing, and gets clicked.
GEO (generative engine optimization)
is improving how often, and how accurately, your brand is mentioned or cited in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, by researchers at Princeton and IIT Delhi, later published at KDD 2024 (paper).
Where AEO fits in
AEO (answer engine optimization) is an older term for making content easy for search engines and assistants to pull out as a direct answer, such as featured snippets and voice answers. Many people now use AEO and GEO to mean much the same thing: being the source an answer is built from.
In practice, AEO is mostly about clear, question-and-answer content, and GEO is the wider job of being mentioned and cited by AI tools across the web.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in search results and win the click | Be the direct answer to a question | Be mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers |
| Where it shows | Search results pages | Featured snippets, voice answers, answer boxes | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and similar tools |
| What helps most | Crawlable pages, relevant content, links, good page experience | Clear questions and short, direct answers | Clear, quotable facts, consistent brand information, mentions on trusted sites |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, leads | Snippet wins, answer visibility | Mentions, citations and how you’re described |
What stays the same
More than you might expect. Google says the usual SEO best practices apply to its AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no extra requirements, special files or special schema needed to appear in them. To be shown as a supporting link, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search (Google Search Central, checked 26 October 2026).
So the basics of B2B SEO are also the basics of GEO:
- Pages that can be crawled and indexed
- Helpful content that answers real questions
- A clear site structure
- Trustworthy, accurate information
What’s actually different
Clicks vs mentions
SEO success is often a click. In an AI answer, success can be a mention or a citation, even when nobody clicks.
Your site vs the whole web
AI answers can draw on reviews, comparison articles and other sites, not just your own pages. What others say about you matters more.
Different crawlers
AI tools have their own crawlers. OpenAI, for example, uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and says sites that block it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI, checked 26 October 2026).
Quotable content
The GEO paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved how often content was surfaced in AI answers on its test benchmark, while keyword stuffing didn’t help.
Harder to measure
AI answers vary from one question and one day to the next, so you track trends, not fixed positions.
What B2B teams should do
Fix the SEO basics first
If your site can’t be crawled or indexed, nothing else matters.
Rewrite key pages answer-first
Start service and FAQ pages with short, direct answers to the questions buyers ask.
Make your facts consistent
Company description, services and who you serve should match everywhere.
Earn mentions
Reviews, directories, industry publications and comparison articles all feed AI answers.
Check AI tools regularly
Ask the questions your buyers ask and note whether you’re mentioned and how.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO helps your website show up and get clicked in search results. GEO helps your brand get mentioned or cited in answers written by AI tools. Much of the groundwork is the same.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says normal SEO best practices still apply to its AI features, so good SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds focus on clear, quotable content and mentions on other trusted sites.
What is AEO vs SEO?
AEO, answer engine optimization, focuses on being the direct answer to a question, such as a featured snippet. SEO is the wider job of ranking and getting clicks in search results.
What is AEO vs GEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO is mainly about clear question-and-answer content, while GEO covers being mentioned and cited by AI tools across the web.
Do I need special files or schema for GEO?
For Google’s AI features, Google says no special files or schema are required. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI recommends allowing its OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt.
Do you offer SEO and GEO together?
Yes. Services can be combined, and your package is built around your goals.
