Can you actually “rank” in ChatGPT?
Not in the way you rank on a Google results page. ChatGPT doesn’t show a numbered list of websites, and no one, including us, can promise a specific placement.
What you can do is improve your chances of being mentioned or cited when ChatGPT answers questions about your market. That comes down to three things: whether AI tools can reach your site, whether your content clearly answers the questions buyers ask, and whether other trusted sites mention you.
Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT’s search crawler can reach your site
OpenAI uses different crawlers for different jobs. According to OpenAI’s crawler documentation (checked 26 October 2026):
OAI-SearchBot
is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that block it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in search results.
GPTBot
is used for training OpenAI’s models. It’s a separate setting, so you can allow search while blocking training, or the other way round.
ChatGPT-User
is used when a user asks ChatGPT to visit a page. OpenAI says it isn’t used to decide whether content appears in search.
OpenAI also notes that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to affect search results.
A simple robots.txt rule that allows the search crawler looks like this:
Check with your developer before changing robots.txt, as it affects every crawler that reads it.
Step 2: Answer buyer questions clearly
AI answers are built from content that clearly answers a question. Make yours easy to quote:
Put the answer first
Start each page or section with a one- or two-sentence answer, then explain.
Use the words buyers use
Write headings as the questions people actually ask.
Be specific
Say what you do, who it’s for and how it works, in plain language.
Keep facts consistent
Your services, company name and description should match across your website and profiles.
Back claims up
Research published as “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal and colleagues, KDD 2024) found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved how often content was surfaced in generative answers on its test benchmark, while keyword stuffing didn’t help (paper). Only add facts you can source.
Step 3: Get mentioned on sites AI tools trust
AI answers can draw on more than your own website. When buyers ask “who are the best companies for X?”, the answer can draw on reviews, comparison articles, directories and industry publications.
- Keep your profiles on relevant review sites and directories accurate and up to date.
- Contribute expert comments or articles to industry publications.
- Publish useful, original content others will want to reference.
- Ask happy clients for honest reviews on the platforms your buyers use.
Step 4: Don’t forget classic SEO
Good B2B SEO still matters. Google says the usual SEO best practices apply to its own AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no extra requirements or special files needed to appear in them (Google Search Central, checked 26 October 2026).
That means fast, crawlable pages, clear site structure, helpful content and pages that are indexed. For more on how the two fit together, read GEO vs SEO.
Step 5: Check whether your brand shows up
- Make a list of the questions your buyers ask before they buy.
- Ask those questions in ChatGPT and other AI tools regularly, and note whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described and which sources are cited.
- Fix what’s wrong: missing pages, outdated facts, weak profiles.
- In Google, Search Console counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode within its normal Performance report (under the “Web” search type), according to Google’s documentation.
Answers can change from one day to the next, so look at trends over time, not single results.
What not to do
Don’t stuff keywords
It didn’t help in the GEO research, and it makes pages worse for people.
Don’t invent facts or reviews
Inaccurate claims can be repeated back to buyers and damage trust.
Don’t block OAI-SearchBot by accident
Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot-blocking settings.
Don’t expect instant results
Changes take time to be picked up, and answers vary.
